Opposition critic for Tourism, Sport and the Arts to tour East Kootenay
In his role as Opposition Critic for Tourism, Sport and the Arts, Columbia River – Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald is visiting Cranbrook, Fernie and Sparwood on December 18th and 19th.
“I’ll be meeting with Arts and Heritage organizations like the Fernie and District Historical Society and the Sparwood District Arts and Heritage Council,” said Macdonald. “Arts and heritage are a very important part of our province, and an area that we must be careful not to neglect.”
Macdonald has spoken strongly for increased provincial funding for art organizations such as the BC Arts Council as well as local arts councils stating that a healthy society is one which has a vibrant arts community.
Macdonald, a former high school history teacher, is also a strong supporter of small local museums.
“I’ve toured many small museums throughout the province, both in my role as critic but also as a private citizen. Small museums hold a tremendous wealth of artifacts that must be preserved.
“Consistent funding for on-going operating costs should be provided to small museums. If we care about our history we will understand the crucial role small museums play and ensure that needed funding.”
