“It’s wonderful to see kids taking responsibility for their environment,” said Macdonald.  “These students became aware that our use of plastic bags was harmful, and they decided to do something about it.”

NES students made a presentation to the Town of Golden, made informational signs for to be displayed at grocery stores, and committed to talking to their parents and family members about using reusable bags for carrying groceries and other store purchases.

“I’ve really noticed a change in town; more and more people are carrying their own reusable bags.  And Overwaitea and Sobey’s have also really supported that change by providing incentives for shoppers to switch.

“It just goes to show that we really can make a difference.  If you believe in something, and you are willing to make an effort, you can change things for the better and that is an inspiring lesson that we can learn from these students.”
