Macdonald salutes Nicholson students; lawmakers reminded of their responsibility to protect the environment by reducing the use of plastic bags

On November 24th, Columbia River – Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald rose in the House to commend the students of Nicholson Elementary for their work to reduce the use of plastic bags.  Students in grades 1 – 5 have been involved in a number of initiatives to encourage Golden area residents to switch to reusable bags.

“It’s wonderful to see kids taking responsibility for their environment,” said Macdonald.  “These students became aware that our use of plastic bags was harmful, and they decided to do something about it.”

NCES students made a presentation to the Town of Golden, made informational signs for to be displayed at grocery stores, and committed to talking to their parents and family members about using reusable bags for carrying groceries and other store purchases.

“I’ve really noticed a change in town; more and more people are carrying their own reusable bags.  And Overwaitea and Sobey’s have also really supported that change by providing incentives for shoppers to switch.

“It just goes to show that we really can make a difference.  If you believe in something, and you are willing to make an effort, you can change things for the better and that is an inspiring lesson that we can learn from these students.”
