MLA, Norm Macdonald recently spoke to Golden youth about political leadership.

On October 16, Macdonald visited Golden Secondary School to talk to students about politics and parliamentary life.

Macdonald said he had the opportunity to present the basics of the parliamentary system with three different classes. Students even rearranged their desks to simulate the experience.

“A lot of students were asking questions about what my job is like, how much I travel and how this balances with my family life,” said Macdonald, adding, “the kids were great and showed a lot of interest.”

“The message I tried to convey is that when issues are really important, people need to work at getting their views represented,” said Macdonald, adding, “It’s important to be active on occasion, and it’s important to have the ability to do it effectively.”

While at GSS , Macdonald also talked about BC Youth Parliament (BCYP), an organization that recently put out a call for 95 youths to visit Victoria this Christmas. Youths that participate in the program gain an opportunity to experience the political process, said Macdonald.

Gary Taft, the current Mayor of Invermere, participated in the BCYP program five times, an experience that helped him become a Town Councillor by the age of 20. Taft said there is a lot to be gained through BCYP.

“Youth Parliament is a very positive experience because it is the only group that is allowed to use the Legislature in Victoria, said Taft, adding, “Participants go through the exact same motions as if they were in government. And the legislation that is passed is actually carried out that year.”

Another great aspect about the program, said Taft, is that it provides an outlet for students with an interest in politics that don’t often get a chance to engage in the issues.

“If you’re young and into politics, this program is great because there are lots of people to connect with, which lets you know you’re not completely crazy.”

Mayor of Golden, Christina Benty, also spoke highly of the program.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the democratic process in action.  Participation in Youth Parliament will hopefully inspire those who wish to influence change in their future government.”
